    MySite Organizational Hierarchy Update

A while back, I blogged about how the Organization Hierarchy section of the MySite page was causing crashes and performance errors.  It was trying to load 3000 users before the page rendered.  I now know why I was having the issue and a better workaround.

Manager is what drives the Org chart area.  It so happens that our AD team uses the Manager property to hold the name of the import process that manages profiles--not a person manager O.o.  Ok, so that means that since everyone was imported the same way, MOSS thinks we all have the same manager.

First I went into SSP and opened the list of User Profile Properties.  I clicked Manager and picked Edit from the drop-down.  Then I made it a field that users can change and switched the Property Import Mapping to "Enter Field to Map" but left it blank.  This unmaps the property (but doesn't clear it out from the profiles that have it set).

Then I went into SPD and backed up my current pages in MySite and reset to site definition (love that feature!).  I checked a couple of profiles I had blanked out Manager and ones where I set the Manager to a person.  The Org area loaded fine and looked great.

I look forward to figuring out how to erase the manager data, start with a clean slate, and reclaim the Organization Hierarchy feature of MySite.
